Find The Needle: How Many Needles Are There? (2026)

Find The Needle has 24 needles total, per the Steam store. How the hunt works, how to search efficiently, and why there is no public location list.

Steam App ID 5160800 · Early Access Nov 6, 2026
Last Updated: 2026-11-02

There are 24 needles in Find The Needle. The Steam store page states the total directly. Finding all of them is the collection goal that sits on top of the hay-selling and factory-building loop.

What the store does not publish is a location list, a map, or a confirmation that all 24 are available in the Early Access build on day one. This page explains what is known, how to hunt efficiently, and why we will not invent coordinates.

Source and status

The 24-needle total is from the official Steam listing for App ID 5160800, checked November 2, 2026. Needle locations and spawn rules are not published. This is a strategy guide, not a datamined map.

The short answer

  • Total needles: 24
  • Pile types: Standard and Mountain
  • Primary tool: shovel, then metal detector or scanner
  • Collection display: the demo and trailer show a display case with needle slots
  • Ending: no confirmed ending is described on the store page

The display case matters. It gives you a visual count of what you have found and what is missing. If the case has 24 slots, the total is consistent with the store's number. If it has fewer in the demo, the demo is a slice, not the full set.

Why there is no location list (yet)

A location list would be the most useful page on this site. It would also be fabrication if we published one before the game is out. The store page does not list needle coordinates, the demo is a limited build, and the Early Access build was not live when this page was written.

There are three possibilities for how needles spawn:

  1. Fixed locations — the same 24 spots in every run.
  2. Seeded randomness — locations are randomized per save.
  3. Hybrid — some fixed, some random.

The game's design suggests a mix: the display case implies a curated collection, while the six-million-strand pile implies exploration. We will not guess which model it uses until the community or the developer confirms it.

After launch, this page will be updated with one of two things: a verified location table, or a clear statement that locations are randomized and a search-method guide is the correct approach.

How to hunt needles efficiently

1. Use the metal detector or scanner

The store lists a metal detector as a tool and a scanner as automation equipment. Both imply detection. If you are digging randomly, you are doing the slow version of the hunt.

Use the detector in a systematic pattern:

  • sweep a lane
  • move one body-width
  • sweep back
  • mark the boundary of the searched area

Do not wander. A search pattern is faster than intuition because it guarantees coverage.

2. Dig wide, not deep

A narrow tunnel exposes less surface. A wide cut exposes more hay and gives you more chances to see a glint or get a detector reading. It also makes it easier to move through the pile and to route a belt later.

3. Search after you automate

The strongest play is to let machines handle the hay while you hunt. If you are still carrying every scoop, you are splitting your attention. Build a short belt to a baler or sell point, then use the freed time to sweep the pile.

This is also why the automation guide comes before the needle hunt in our reading order. Automation is not just about money; it buys you search time.

4. Clear one section at a time

Pick a boundary — a wall, a support beam, a color change in the hay — and clear up to it. Then move to the next section. This prevents the “I think I already searched here” problem that makes random hunting so slow.

5. Record what you find

The display case is your record. If the game does not label the slots, take a screenshot after each find. A simple note of “north wall, lower third, near the blue machine” is enough to avoid re-searching.

Standard vs Mountain

The two pile types likely change the hunt:

  • Standard is the 7–10 hour pile. The needle count is the same 24, but the search area is smaller. This is the better first completion run.
  • Mountain is the 30+ hour pile. A larger pile means more hay, more machines and a longer search. It is for players who want the factory to last.

Do not assume Mountain has more needles. The store says 24 total, not 24 per pile. The difference is the size of the search, not necessarily the number of collectibles.

What counts as “finding” a needle?

The demo and trailer show a needle close-up and a display case. The exact interaction is not documented. It may be:

  • walk over the needle
  • look at it and press the interact prompt
  • use the metal detector to mark it, then dig
  • automatically collect it when the scoop removes the hay around it

The safest approach is to watch for the interaction prompt whenever the detector reacts. Do not assume a needle is collected just because you saw it; check the display case count.

The collection reward

The store does not describe a reward for all 24 needles. It may be:

  • a completion screen
  • a cosmetic
  • a new machine or tool
  • an ending scene
  • nothing beyond the display case

Because this is unconfirmed, do not buy the game expecting a specific ending. Buy it for the loop. The ending and playtime page covers what is and is not known about completion.

A realistic hunt plan

Hour 1–2: learn the pile, build the first belt, buy the detector when affordable.

Hour 2–4: sweep the starting area in lanes. Do not chase every reading; mark and return.

Hour 4–7: automate the hay flow so you can search without losing income.

Hour 7–10: finish the Standard pile's remaining sections. Check the display case after every session.

Mountain: repeat with a larger layout and more machines. Expect the search to take multiple sessions.

This plan assumes a first playthrough. A second run can be faster because you know the pile's shape and the tech order.

Common needle-hunt mistakes

  • Digging only where the detector screams. The detector may have a range; sweep slowly.
  • Ignoring the display case. It is your only reliable count.
  • Searching the same tunnel twice. Mark boundaries.
  • Selling all the hay before searching. You can do both; the belt should run while you hunt.
  • Assuming a needle is a guaranteed spawn in the demo. The demo is a slice.
  • Downloading a “needle map” before launch. It does not exist. Anything claiming to be one is guessing or malware.
